The Heart of Design: Emotions, Aesthetics, and Business Strategy
A retrospective on my design career
As a designer, my journey into the world of creativity began with a simple desire: to craft beautiful things. The allure of shaping aesthetics and creating visually stunning experiences drew me in, igniting a passion that has guided me through my career. However, over time, I've come to realize that being a designer is about much more than just creating beauty; it's about orchestrating an intricate dance between user needs, business objectives, and emotional connections.
For me, the essence of design has always been centered around one goal: to delight users with exceptional digital experiences. This guiding principle has led me to focus on maintaining a delicate balance—a sort of "Equilateral" triangle—between the needs of the user, the demands of the business, and the aesthetic and emotional elements of design.
The challenge lies in keeping this triangle in equilibrium. It's about understanding that while each aspect is crucial in its own right, none can overshadow the others. As designers, we're tasked not only with advocating for the user, but also with educating stakeholders about the multifaceted nature of design. It's not just about creating pretty screens; it's about crafting experiences that resonate on a deeper level.
This sometimes means navigating disagreements with stakeholders, particularly when their priorities diverge from those of the user. But it's our responsibility to champion the user's perspective, to help stakeholders see beyond the surface and understand the emotional impact of design decisions.
Yet, we must also remember that we're not just artists; we're problem solvers, business partners, and catalysts for success. Design isn't just about making something look cool; it's about driving results and helping businesses thrive. Balancing these competing priorities is perhaps the greatest skill a designer can possess.
While the craft of design is undeniably important, it's merely the starting point. As we evolve in our careers, it's essential to broaden our perspective and recognize the deeper impact of our work. We must never lose sight of our roots, using our craft as a tool to forge meaningful connections and evoke powerful emotions.
The truth is, achieving the perfect equilibrium in the designer's triangle is a lifelong pursuit. It's a journey of growth, learning, and adaptation. But even if the triangle never truly becomes equilateral, we can still strive to reach for it, using it as a guiding star to navigate the ever-changing landscape of design.
In the end, being a designer is not just a job—it's a calling. It's about harnessing creativity to solve problems, inspire emotions, and shape the world around us. And as long as we remain committed to that calling, the journey will always be worth it.
